В прошлое воскресенье перевели статью Оливера Хаслама о том, что новому сверхбыстрому iPad нужна другая операционная система. Сегодня разбираемся, почему этой системой не может стать macOS — перевод статьи Эда Харди. 

Решение Apple выпустить iPad Pro с процессором M1 повлекло за собой очередные призывы перенести на планшет и macOS. «Поставьте macOS на iPad, трусы», — гласил один особенно радикальный заголовок. 

Но это стало бы настолько серьезной ошибкой, что обвалило бы продажи iPad и Mac. Чтобы оправиться от такого, нужны годы.  

То, что Mac и iPad работают теперь на одном чипе, неважно, так как macOS просто не предназначена для сенсорного экрана. Apple придется перерабатывать операционную систему под планшет, а разработчикам — менять сторонние приложения. Это разозлит людей, которые пользуются ноутбуками и стационарными компьютерами без сенсорных экранов. Тем, кто доволен iPad сейчас, тоже не понравится. 

Для macOS на iPad надо будет переработать интерфейс

Посмотрите на свой Mac. Видите эти крошечные элементы управления — особенно в приложениях? Все это нужно изменить. Потому что курсор может активировать гораздо меньший элемент управления, чем кончик пальца. 

Apple пришлось бы переделать macOS, чтобы она работала на планшете без трекпада или мыши. А разработчикам пришлось бы пересобрать свои приложения. Такой процесс не может быть быстрым: Adobe адаптировала Photoshop для iPad годы — и ему все еще далеко до идеала. И это при условии, что разработчики согласятся приложить огромные усилия, чтобы пересобрать свои приложения для «macPad».  

А пока вам нужно будет носить с собой Apple Pencil, чтобы попадать по всем этим крохотным иконкам. Да, вы всегда сможете подключить клавиатуру и трекпад, но если вы собираетесь это сделать, почему бы просто не использовать MacBook?

И учтите, что любые изменения пользовательского интерфейса в macOS будут перенесены на MacBook, iMac и так далее. Создание двух разных версий — одной для сенсорных экранов, другой для обычной — запутало бы среднестатистического владельца Mac (а также означало бы кучу работы и расходов для Apple). Таким образом, пользователям MacBook и Mac mini придется мириться с интерфейсом, предназначенным для работы жестами, когда они используют мышку или трекпад. Это много потраченного впустую места. А функции, которые нельзя активировать пальцем, придется заменить.

Когда я предсказываю катастрофу для macOS на iPad, я не рассуждаю чисто гипотетически. Microsoft прошла именно этот путь при создании Windows 8 для планшетов, настольных компьютеров и ноутбуков. Все пошло не так. Вообще все.

Я помню, как запускал Windows 8 на планшете Microsoft Surface. Несмотря на изменения, пользовательский интерфейс не очень хорошо подходил для сенсорного управления — настолько, что пришлось доставать стилус для большинства базовых задач. В основном я использовал планшет как ноутбук с клавиатурой и мышкой. И это был не лучший опыт. Как написали The Verge в обзоре 2012 года: «Если вы используете Windows 8 на настольном ПК с клавиатурой и мышью, иногда это может быть неловко, разочаровывать и сбивать с толку». 

А теперь перейдем к Windows 10. Microsoft устранила самые большие ошибки, и все равно получилась операционная система, которая которая хорошо подходит для настольных компьютеров и ноутбуков — и не слишком ужасна на планшетах. На моем планшете стоит Windows 10 — я знаю, о чем говорю. В итоге приходится использовать стилус гораздо чаще, чем хотелось бы. 

На самом деле, я в основном использую свой iPad, потому что у него как раз есть интерфейс, изначально предназначенный для сенсорного управления.

Лучшее решение — iPadOS на iPad

Вот в чем суть проблемы. Идея заменить iPadOS на macOS заключается в расширении возможностей iPad. Но это лишило бы iPad всех его преимуществ. И есть более действенный способ — продолжать улучшать iPadOS.

У каждого человека есть свои хотелки, но самые очевидные включают больше возможностей для подключения вторых экранов, а также более гибкое управление окнами для приложений и улучшенное приложение «Файлы». Еще пригодилась бы расширенная поддержка многозадачности. 

Плюс многим бы пригодилось более профессиональное программное обеспечение для iPad. Apple определенно следует выпустить версии Xcode, Final Cut Pro и Logic Pro, адаптированные под iPad и сенсорные экраны.

Есть еще один вариант: дать iPadOS возможность запускать приложения Mac без изменения дизайна самой операционной системы. Некоторым были бы удобнее выбирать между двумя системами, чтобы macOS работала тогда, когда к планшету подключены трекпад и клавиатура. Лично я думаю, что это слишком сложно. 

А вообще перестаньте

Замена iPadOS на macOS принесет больше проблем, чем преимуществ. Несмотря на все ограничения, сейчас нет лучшей операционной системы для планшетов, чем у iPad. Apple следует исправить iPadOS, а не отказываться от нее. И Купертино, конечно, не следует объединять iPadOS с macOS — это может привести лишь к беспорядку, который все ненавидят. 

К счастью, этого не будет. Руководство Apple не раз заявляло, что не собирается объединять Mac и iPad. Так что хватит просить. Это ужасная идея.
