Я увидела лицо Бога. На фабрике полупроводников

В то время как США наращивают производство процессоров, американская журналистка Вирджиния Хефернан из WIRED отправляется на фабрику TSMC — таинственной тайваньской компании, находящейся в центре глобальной индустрии полупроводников.

Я прилетела на Тайвань, мрачно размышляя о судьбе демократии. Ну и мой багаж был потерян. Это мое паломничество к Священной горе защиты. Считается, что Священная гора защищает весь остров Тайвань — и даже, по мнению особо набожных, защищает саму демократию. Этот разросшийся эксперимент по управлению, который на протяжении большей части столетия морально и фактически господствовал над потенциально свободным миром. На самом деле гора — это промышленный парк в Хсинчу, прибрежном городе к юго-западу от Тайбэя. Его святыня носит непритязательное название: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

В виде этих миниатюрных шедевров, которые располагаются на микрочипах, полупроводниковая промышленность производит за год больше объектов, чем когда-либо производилось на всех других заводах всех других отраслей промышленности за всю историю мира.

Конечно, теперь, когда я еду на скоростном поезде в Ксинчу, я понимаю, что точное название опасности, от которой защищает Священная гора, не стоит произносить. Угроза со стороны пролива шириной 200 километров к западу от литейных заводов угрожает Тайваню каждую секунду каждого дня. Чтобы не упоминать ни одну из стран по имени — или они одна страна? — тайваньские газеты часто эвфемизируют воинственность Пекина по отношению к острову как «межпроливную напряженность». Язык, на котором говорят по обе стороны пролива — внутренний водный путь? международные воды? — известен только как «мандаринский». Чем дольше угроза остается безымянной, тем больше она становится похожа на астероид, иррациональный и бесчувственный. И, как астероид, она может ударить в любое время и уничтожить все.

Заводы по производству полупроводников, известные как фабрики, являются одним из величайших чудес цивилизации. Кремниевые микрочипы, созданные в них, являются непременным условием существования мира, настолько необходимым для жизни человека, что их часто рассматривают как товары первой необходимости. Они, безусловно, являются товарами в средневековом смысле: удобствами, комфортом. В конце 80-х годов некоторые инвесторы даже экспериментировали с торговлей ими на фьючерсных рынках.

Но в отличие от меди и люцерны, чипсы не являются сырьем. Возможно, это валюта, монета глобального мира, выраженная в единицах вычислительной мощности. Действительно, подобно тому, как эзотерические символы превращают банальные хлопково-льняные заплаты в долларовые купюры, так и загадочные решетки, нанесенные на кусочки обычного кремния, с помощью техники печати, удивительно похожей на ту, с помощью которой чеканятся бумажные деньги, превращают почти не имеющий ценности материал в строительные блоки самой ценности. Именно это происходит в TSMC.

Как и деньги, чипы одновременно являются осязаемым материалом и двигателем почти всех современных абстракций, от законов, концепций до самого познания. А отношения власти и глобальной экономики полупроводниковых чипов могут оказаться такими же умопомрачительными, как рынки криптовалют и производных ценных бумаг. Или как некоторые теологии, в которых есть наноангелы, танцующие на нанобулавках.

Как и подобает паломнику, я устала. Полет из аэропорта Кеннеди в Тайбэй едва не вывел меня из строя — чуть меньше 18 мучительных часов в хвосте битком набитого самолета 777. Я разрядила свое бессонное беспокойство, прокручивая игры для iOS и настойчиво оглядываясь на Путина, Си, республиканцев MAGA и остальных нигилистически настроенных людей со злобными замыслами в отношении демократии. В то же время я в миллионный раз остерегала себя от ястребиного настроя, как это делают правые и богатые, когда чувствуют себя не в своей тарелке, стремясь к новому столкновению цивилизаций или — что более вероятно — стремясь подавить китайскую конкуренцию, чтобы заработать больше денег.

Как узнали пассажиры только при посадке в Тайбэе, самолет взлетел без одной сумки эконом-класса. На выдаче багажа нам сказали два слова: «Война в Украине». Мой чемодан на колесиках Samsonite, в котором были «Война чипов» Криса Миллера и «Страсти и интересы» Альберта Хиршмана — книга, заставившая меня задуматься об этимологии слова «товар» — вернулся в Нью-Йорк. Мы были вынуждены путешествовать налегке. Рейсы из американских аэропортов теперь должны огибать российское воздушное пространство в районе Аляски, откуда они запрещены, в отместку за запрет США на российские полеты в американском воздушном пространстве, который, конечно, был ответом на вторжение России в Украину в прошлом году.

За этим вторжением и мужественной защитой, организованной украинскими гражданами, внимательно следили на Тайване. Украина является своего рода травмированным государством-сестрой Тайваня, еще одной многообещающей демократией, которую соседний авторитарный режим вымогает, чтобы забрать себе. Это восприятие накладывает отпечаток на полупроводниковый бизнес. В 1675 году французский купец по имени Жак Савари опубликовал книгу «Идеальный купец» — руководство по коммерции, которое впоследствии стало руководством по ведению торговли во всем мире. Альберт Хиршман ссылается на Савари, чтобы объяснить как капитализм, который еще в 16 веке считался не более, чем жадностью, в 17 веке стал самым разумным стремлением людей.

Савари твердо верил, что международная торговля станет противоядием от войны. Люди не могут вести полиглотскую торговлю через границы, не изучив чужие законы, обычаи и культуры. Савари также считал, что ресурсы Земли и общение, созданное торговлей, даны Богом. «Воля Бога не в том, чтобы все необходимые человеку вещи находились в одном и том же месте», — писал Сэвери. «Божественное провидение распределило свои дары так, чтобы люди торговали вместе и обнаружили, что их взаимная потребность помогать друг другу устанавливает между ними узы дружбы».

Успех TSMC основан на ее уникальном понимании этого распределения провиденциальных даров. Каждый транзистор примерно в тысячу раз меньше, чем видно невооруженным глазом. 

Поэтому я воспринимаю TSMC одновременно и как футуристический, и как трогательный откат назад: дань уважения в значительной степени ушедшей романтике Савари, в которой либеральная демократия, международная торговля, прогресс в науке и искусстве являются единым целым, здоровым и неостановимым. Ни один журналист WIRED до сих пор не проникал в святая святых мира чипов и не осмотрел фабрику TSMC. Вот почему я хочу попасть внутрь. Я хочу знать, что происходит на атомарном уровне на заводах, и как это может быть похоже на божественность или, по крайней мере, на воплощение человеческого духа, что, согласно основополагающим принципам гуманизма, означает одно и то же.

Марк Лю, председатель совета директоров TSMC, не любит называть компанию «Священной горой защиты». «Мы представляем собой сотрудничество эпохи глобализации», — говорит он. «Этот образ делает нас «исключительными».

Тем не менее, прежде чем ступить на порог штаб-квартиры TSMC, я настраиваюсь на социально требовательный дух Googleplex. Бесплатный розовый ласси и рокфиш из орехов пекан. Мужчины в часах Patek Philippe. Снобы. Но стиль TSMC, к моей радости, похож на мой сегодняшний: хлопок, никакого выпендрежа, плечики. Три звезды на Yelp.

Штаб-квартира TSMC находится через дорогу от конкурирующей фабрики UMC. Это может показаться подготовкой к мелодраме. Но в TSMC осторожность — не просто лучшая часть доблести; это бизнес-модель. Компания является консервативной во всех отношениях. Если, несмотря на ее геостратегическую мощь, вы не знаете ее названия, то так оно и задумано. Никто не пытается сделать селфи у главного здания, как это делают в Google, и когда безоружные швейцары строго попросили меня не фотографировать фасад, им не стоило беспокоиться. Это место — стеклянное и забытое, с несколькими полусерьезными вкраплениями цвета, в основном красного. Это похоже на конференц-центр 90-х годов в небольшом американском городе, возможно, в Шарлотте.

Работникам TSMC платят хорошо по тайваньским стандартам. Начальная зарплата инженера эквивалентна примерно 5400 долларов в месяц, а стоимость аренды однокомнатной квартиры в Хсинчу составляет около 450 долларов. Но они не щеголяют в кожаных костюмах и перестроенных телах Безоса, как американские технологи. Я спрашиваю Майкла Крамера, любезного сотрудника отдела по связям с общественностью компании, чей приятный выспавшийся стиль наводит на мысль о малооплачиваемом учителе математики, о привилегиях компании. Когда я впервые спросила Крамера о посещении заводов по телефону из Нью-Йорка, он ответил отрицательно. Это было похоже на сказку; ему пришлось отказать мне три раза, а мне пришлось упорствовать, доказывая свою искренность, как рыцарь или дочь короля Лира. К счастью, искренности мне не занимать. Мой интерес к фабрикам граничит с фанатизмом. TSMC и принципы, которые она выражает, стали появляться в моих снах как последняя надежда для… ну, возможно, для человеческой цивилизации. Я хочу смотреть на Священную гору и ее обещания невинными глазами, как будто ничто за последние три столетия не поставило под угрозу самые смелые фантазии Локка, Ньютона и Адама Смита.

Гонка в полупроводниках — это гонка за скоростью и точностью. Поскольку скорость и точность в бизнесе обычно противоречат друг другу — если двигаться быстро, то все ломается. Если вы считаете, что производство полупроводников — это всего лишь заводская работа, вы можете назвать этот проект монотонным. Но наноразмерная работа по производству микросхем однообразна только в том случае, если ваши уши недостаточно остры, чтобы услышать симфонию.

Два качества, говорит мне Марк Лю, отличают ученых TSMC: любопытство и выносливость. Религия, к моему удивлению, тоже встречается. «Каждый ученый должен верить в Бога», — говорит Лю.

Я сижу напротив председателя совета директоров в конференц-зале, заставленном трофеями. Великолепно смотрится масштабная модель японского корабля с полными жгутами сокровищ, подаренная компанией Yamaha. На наше интервью Лю принес свою собственную модель: Lego-модель потрясающего полевого транзистора TSMC с ребрами, который управляет током в полупроводнике с помощью электрического поля, узкого ребра, системы затворов и очень низкого напряжения. «Мы создаем атомарные конструкции», — говорит мне Лю. «Я говорю своим инженерам: «Думайте как человек атомного размера». Докторские исследования Лю в Калифорнийском университете в Беркли в 1970-х годах были посвящены удивительным способам поведения ионов при выстреле в кремний; он имеет в виду атомы, которые Бог утаил. Эти несокрушимые сокровища всегда были погребены в материи, ожидая изобретения сканирующих электронных микроскопов и ученых с достаточной усидчивостью, чтобы проводить десятилетия подряд, заглядывая в их атомные глаза. «Выхода нет», — говорит мне Лю. «Ты всегда чувствуешь, что царапаешь поверхность. Является ли любопытство адаптивным? Безусловно, оно присуще некоторым нервным системам, и оно побуждает эксцентричную группу людей среди нас — ученых-исследователей — подходить к материальному миру как к бесконечной проблеме луковой шелухи. «С невозмутимым и бездыханным рвением я преследовал природу до ее тайников», — сказал Виктор Франкенштейн. Слабые умы разрушаются при первом прикосновении скуки. Отвлечение. Некоторые на Тайване называют их американскими умами.

Превращение, происходящее на заводах, происходит примерно так. Сначала идет кремниевая пластина. Проектор, объектив которого покрыт кристаллической пластиной, испещренной характерными узорами, наклоняют над рабочей поверхностью. Затем экстремальный ультрафиолетовый свет проникает сквозь пластину и попадает на поверхность, отпечатывая на ней рисунок, после чего она окунается в химикаты для травления рисунка. Это повторяется снова и снова, пока на кремнии не будут напечатаны десятки решетчатых слоев. Наконец, из пластины вырезают чипы. Каждый чип с миллиардами транзисторов, расположенных на нем, представляет собой атомную многомерную шахматную доску с миллиардами квадратов. Потенциальные комбинации включений и выключений можно считать бесконечными.

Во время пандемии TSMC начала интенсивно использовать дополненную реальность для проведения совещаний по координации этих процессов, собирая своих далеко разбросанных партнеров в виртуальном общем пространстве. Их аватары символически работали плечом к плечу, все они носили коммерческие AR-очки, которые позволяли каждому участнику видеть то, что видят другие, и устранять неполадки в режиме реального времени. Компания TSMC была настолько довольна эффективностью AR для этих целей, что с 2020 года начала активно использовать их. Я никогда не слышала, чтобы кто-то, кроме Марка Цукерберга, так радовался метавселенной.

Но это важно: искусственный интеллект и AR все еще не могут сделать все это самостоятельно. Хотя Лю с энтузиазмом говорит о неизбежности появления заводов, полностью управляемых компьютером, пока еще не существует завода «без света», завода, функционирующего без человеческих глаз и их зависимости от света в видимом диапазоне. Пока же 20 тысяч технических специалистов, рядовых сотрудников TSMC, составляющих одну треть персонала, следят за каждым шагом цикла создания атомов. Системные инженеры и исследователи материалов, работающие по изнурительному круглосуточному графику, поднимаются с постели, чтобы устранить бесконечно малые сбои в чипах. Какой-то процент чипов все равно не доходит до конца, и, хотя ИИ делает большую часть работы по спасению, люди все равно должны предвидеть и решать самые сложные проблемы в стремлении увеличить выход продукции. Лю говорит мне, что заметить нанодефекты на чипе — это все равно что заметить полдоллара на Луне со своего заднего двора.

Начиная с 2021 года сотни американских инженеров приехали на стажировку в TSMC в преддверии того, что им придется управлять дочерней фабрикой TSMC в Аризоне, которая должна начать производство в этом году. Очевидно, что групповая стажировка была нелегкой. Противоречивые слухи о столкновении культур теперь циркулируют в социальных сетях и на Glassdoor. Американские инженеры называют TSMC «потогонной мастерской», а инженеры TSMC отвечают, что американцы — это «дети», которые умственно не готовы управлять современной фабрикой. Другие даже выдвинули бездоказательное предположение, что американцы украдут секреты TSMC и передадут их Intel, которая также открывает огромное количество новых заводов в США.

Несмотря на то, что сам он получил образование инженера в Массачусетском технологическом институте и Стэнфорде, Моррис Чанг, основавший компанию TSMC в 1987 году, долгое время утверждал, что американские инженеры менее любознательны и энергичны, чем их коллеги на Тайване. Мне нравится, что он подтрунивает надо мной по поводу моего увлечения TSMC; у меня такое чувство, что он привык обходиться без неуместных вопросов о напряженности в отношениях между двумя странами и меньше вопросов о святости заводов. Пока мы ждем известий о моей экскурсии, я пытаюсь изложить ему более грандиозные теории.

Компания, существенно поддерживающей не только обширный экономический сектор, но и мировые демократические союзы, казалось бы, должна быть героическим предприятием, нет? 

Но, похоже, даже эти подвиги — не самое впечатляющее из достижений TSMC. Прошлой весной в одном из выпусков «Шоу Эзры Кляйна» Адам Туз, экономический историк с кембриджским образованием, отверг идею о том, что фабрики являются просто грозными коммерческими и геополитическими силами. «Если вспомнить конфликты вокруг Тайваня, — сказал Туз Кляйну, — глобальная полупроводниковая промышленность — это не просто цепочка поставок. Теперь она звучит в моем сознании как англиканский гимн, необходимый контрапункт к моим стаккато страхов за человеческую цивилизацию, родившихся в эпоху Трампа и все еще бьющих по моим нейронам.

Крамер рассказал мне, что он сын лютеранского миссионера из США и тайваньской учительницы. Он учился в христианской школе в Южном Тайване, а затем в американской школе Тайбэя. Хотя христиане составляют лишь 6 процентов населения Тайваня, Сунь Ятсен, основатель Китайской Республики, был христианином, президент Чан Кай-ши был методистом, а президент Ли Тэн-хуэй — пресвитерианином.

Когда позже я пересказываю слова Тузе о лице Бога Марку Лю, он спокойно соглашается, но уточняет суть. «Бог означает природу. Мы описываем лицо природы в TSMC».

Пока ученые TSMC описывают лик природы, национальные государства соревнуются в производстве лучших полупроводников. Они либо строят заводы и совершенствуют технологии, чтобы не отстать от TSMC, как это делает Китай, либо углубляют альянс с TSMC и Тайванем, которые часто выступают как единое целое. Именно так поступают США. Хотя особые отношения между США и Тайванем все еще остаются неоднозначными, они могут составить конкуренцию альянсу 20-го века между США и Великобританией.

Закон о чипах и науке, который президент США Джо Байден подписал в августе 2022 года, вырос из сделки стоимостью 12 миллиардов долларов по переносу заводов TSMC на американскую землю. Работая в Государственном департаменте, Крах совершил мастерский ход. На заре развития сетей 5G — широкополосной связи с крайне низкой задержкой, позволяющей даже хирургам работать удаленно, — Крах отважился на глобальный раунд вольной дипломатии. В разгар пандемии он с небольшой делегацией в масках объехал более 30 стран мира, от Испании до Доминиканской Республики, от Кипра до Объединенных Арабских Эмиратов. Его целью было убедить влиятельных лиц, занимающих различные должности, в том, что им не следует сотрудничать с китайской компанией Huawei в области 5G, какой бы выгодной ни была цена. Крах гордится тем, что для описания DocuSign и сетей 5G он использовал словосочетание «доверенная технология», и чем больше я рассматриваю положение дел, тем больше эта гордость кажется оправданной. Моррис Чанг предложил услуги TSMC по производству другим компаниям в то время, когда большинство из них производили свои собственные чипы. Чтобы убедить эти компании позволить TSMC взять на себя производство чипов, он с самого начала говорил о доверии.

Но, конечно, доверие, как и честь, существует и в преступных синдикатах, и в закрытых олигополиях. Отличительной чертой такого доверия среди участников «чистой» сети является то, что оно должно идти рука об руку с плюрализмом. В конце концов, вы можете доверять большему числу игроков, если вы можете терпимо относиться к различным общественным устройствам и не ругаете страны только потому, что у них есть нелиберальные или прогрессивные черты: если они применяют смертную казнь, скажем, или разрешают однополые браки. В декабре прошлого года, в присутствии Лю и Байдена, TSMC открыла свою фабрику в Фениксе. В то же время — это пришло мне в голову в спешке — я не могу позволить Крамеру принять мое безразличие к личному стилю за непочтительность. Травление на атомах — это не шутка. Фабрики требуют осторожности, благоговения и, конечно, гигиены священника с омовением. Нервная, непосвященная особа без инженерного образования может стать угрозой в лаборатории, где она может чихнуть, как пузан, и рассыпать кучу сверкающих электронов, как кокаин в «Энни Холл». Я изгоню свою chabuduo из абсолютно беспыльных фабрик, как молекулу неонового газа.

Крамер попросил снять с меня мерки для «чистого» костюма и защитных прокладок для обуви, что я восприняла как хороший знак, что меня пропустят внутрь. И вдруг в календаре появляется моя экскурсия на фабрику 12A — известную как гигафабрика, потому что каждый месяц она обрабатывает 100 тысяч самых больших пластин, 12-дюймовых, — и это уже в календаре. Даже мой багаж уже прибыл.

В послевоенный период страна едва выживала, но она уверенно занялась легкой промышленностью, производя ложки, кружки и, как известно, зонтики. Тайвань преуспел в производстве зонтиков. На пике бума в 70-х годах три из каждых четырех зонтиков в мире производились на острове.

В том же десятилетии дипломатические отношения между Тайванем и США испортились. Никсон открыл торговлю с Китаем, и теперь Китай производил и экспортировал товары, которыми когда-то славился Тайвань. Вот лишь один пример: в течение 20 лет компания Mattel заключала контракты с Тайванем на производство кукол Барби в пригороде Тайшань, недалеко от Тайбэя; город был опустошен, когда Mattel в конце концов перенесла свой бизнес по производству Барби в Китай, где рабочая сила была дешевле. Американские полупроводниковые компании также открыли для себя Тайвань как место для офшорной сборки микросхем. В 1976 году компания RCA начала делиться технологиями с тайваньскими инженерами. Чипсы, те, что без кетчупа, со временем заняли место зонтиков и кукол Барби в экономике Тайваня. И поскольку его инженеры разрабатывали передовые чипы быстрее, чем где-либо на земле, Тайвань действительно заставил США положиться на него.

«Тайвань называют дикобразом, верно?» — говорит Кит Крах. «Это как, просто попробуйте напасть. Вы можете просто взорвать весь остров, но он будет бесполезен для вас».

Чтобы быть по-настоящему важной, глобальная компания должна занимать ключевое место в цепочке поставок. Чанг, который, по его словам, изучает битвы при Мидуэе и Сталинграде, чтобы разработать корпоративную стратегию, ловко установил TSMC между разработкой и производством. Его план был следующим. Фабрики продолжают работать, так как закон Мура мчится как поезд: удвоить производительность, снизить стоимость вдвое. Поскольку маржа прибыли в производстве почти неслыханна, Чанг создал исследовательский институт, работающий как фабрика. Я представляю себе две красные полоски в другом конце комнаты, но нет, никакого «ковида». Утром я поговорю с Лином о том, как он изобрел иммерсионную литографию. Позже я поговорю с Йеном о том, как он изобрел экстремально-ультрафиолетовую литографию для коммерческого использования. Изготовление чипов — это полиграфия, а чтобы понять, что такое печатная машина, нужно понять, что такое литография.

Фотолитографические машины — это специализация фирм-партнеров TSMC, и прежде всего ASML. По слухам, следующее поколение этих машин будет стоить около 400 миллионов долларов. Каждый из самых сложных чипов в мире использует литографию ASML. Но передовые исследования в области литографии проводятся и в TSMC, потому что именно литография должна быть усовершенствована, чтобы фабрики работали эффективно, транзисторы были маленькими, а колеса Мура вращались.

Слово «литография» означает то же самое, что и в художественных студиях: процесс печати, изобретенный в 1796 году Алоисом Зенефельдером, немецким драматургом. Травление на этих уменьшающихся компонентах требовало все более точного света. Длина волны лучей становилась все меньше, пока свет окончательно не занял весь видимый спектр. Затем, примерно в 2000 году, чипмейкеры столкнулись с одной из своих периодических паник: закон Мура застопорился. Чтобы добраться до транзисторов размером 65 нанометров, «все еще можно было использовать испытанную систему», — говорит мне Лин. «Но я предвидел, что на следующем узле, который был 45 нанометров, у нас будут проблемы». 

Люди делали ставку на экстремальный ультрафиолетовый свет, но пройдут годы, прежде чем литографические машины в цехах смогут обеспечить достаточную мощность постоянного источника. Другая идея заключалась в использовании того, что Лин называет «менее агрессивной» длиной волны, где-то между глубоким и экстремальным ультрафиолетом. Но поскольку такой свет не мог пробить существующие линзы, потребовалась бы новая экзотическая линза из фторида кальция. Исследователи построили сотни печей, в которых выращивали нужный кристалл, но ни один метод не помог. Около миллиарда долларов ушло на ветер.

Примерно в 2002 году Лин решил, что они зря теряют время. Он хотел забыть о новой длине волны и невозможной линзе и вместо этого использовать воду. Вода с ее предсказуемым коэффициентом преломления позволила бы литографам лучше контролировать уже известную им длину волны. Он изобрел систему для поддержания воды в идеально однородном состоянии, а затем направил свет через нее на пластину. Бинго. Он смог вытравить транзисторы размером 28 нанометров в итоге с нулевыми дефектами.

«Вода — это чудо», — говорит Лин. «Не только для TSMC. Это чудо для всего человечества. Бог добр к рыбам. А также к нам».

Лин — еще один набожный христианин в TSMC. Его лицо живое и выразительное, он выглядит и двигается как молодой Джин Келли, хотя ему 80 лет. Вернувшись в университетский конференц-зал после размышлений о триумфах TSMC в литографии, Берн-Дженг Лин игриво позирует для фотографии. «Бог очень добр к человечеству», — снова говорит он.
